    Recapping the Week in AiFi

Amidst all the green this week, Coinbase also introduced us to a new acronym for the growing world of agentic payments: AiFi.

While I’m against yet another cutesy term, AiFi, short for agentic finance, does feel like the most fitting term to encompass x402, MPP, agentic trading, agentic commerce — everything emerging as agents gain access to machine-ready money.

    AiFi is already happening.

Here’s to making it stick. Fortunately, we got more than well wishes this week.

The first major development was Stripe’s agreement to acquire OpenRouter, which I wrote about Monday, arguing that Stripe was buying its way into the inference-routing business, a business ripe for the stablecoin and HTTP 402 based infrastructure it’s spent the last year building.

Inference is by-and-large the (current) breakout use case for x402 and agentic payments, and Stripe clearly knows this. Two days after my piece, a leaked investor memo satisfyingly validated this thesis: Stripe described capital and intelligence (interchangeable with inference) as the “two digital flows” increasingly underpinning businesses and said stablecoins will likely become the “native currency of the AI economy.”

OpenRouter gives Stripe a place inside that intelligence pipeline. And while routing markets remain young and susceptible to manipulation, as Tarun and coauthors demonstrated this week, bringing in a payments company built around making economic flows more efficient offers some hope that Stripe can help mature the market.

But OpenRouter was only one of the three headlining developments this week for AiFi: the second was AWS taking AgentCore Payments generally available on Tuesday.

AgentCore gives developers a control layer for equipping our mechanical minions with permissioned access to capital. Users can connect wallets, set spending limits, and audit activity, while AgentCore handles the plumbing needed for agents to access paid services over x402 and MPP.

AWS is by no means alone here in constructing control layers.

I’ve written about Catena, Ampersend, and others previously. Plus, Ramp added x402 support this week alongside similar control features, building on its tightly controlled Agent Cards and financial tooling for corporate agents. The distinction is mostly one of audience: AgentCore feels like customizable developer infrastructure, while Ramp feels like the enterprise-finance version, plugging agents into company budgets, payment methods, and controls.

Ramp Adds x402 Payments for AI Agents on Bankless

Ramp adds x402 payments for AI agents, extending its agent finance push as AWS and Stripe accelerate the agentic payments race.

Both converge on the same primitive: give an agent money, define exactly what it can do with it, and keep a record of what happens.

Overall though, the significance of this launch is that we now have Amazon firmly involved in AiFi, and specifically in x402. As you may remember, they join Google Cloud who previously partnered with the Solana Foundation on Pay.sh, which lets agents access first-party Google Cloud APIs over x402.

The third headline development came from one of China’s payment giants, Alipay, which launched its new full-stack agentic-commerce platform this past Tuesday. Among the offerings the platform gives merchants access to is an agent-payment stack which offers support for payments using the x402 protocol.

    Pretty big.

    One More Thing to Watch

Beyond those three headline announcements, one earlier-stage development from this week is worth watching.

The first is Rain’s Agentic Payments Alliance, which brings together companies including Visa, Mastercard, Circle, among many others, to work on identity, authorization, standards, and regulation for agentic commerce.

There is no tangible product yet, but Rain sits at an interesting junction between onchain money and existing card rails. If x402 and MPP keep developing the machine-native side of payments while cards remain the easiest way to reach most merchants, Rain is well positioned to help connect the two.

All in all, it’s been a historic week across all fronts.

The debasement trade returned as markets reacted to interventionist monetary policy, the kind of environment Bitcoin was built in response to. The U.S. government signaled it’s working to introduce novel financial instruments (expanding perpetuals) through decentralized means (by bringing Hyperliquid onshore). And AiFi posted another “before/after” week, seeing crypto integrated by some of the world’s largest technology and payments companies to enable machine-ready money.

I can’t wait to see what next week holds.
